Last night in a ceremony in Singapore, Air Mauritius claimed the “Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline” at the World Travel Awards ceremony for Asia, Indian Ocean and Australasia.
For the 8th time in a row the national airline of Mauritius has taken out the award.
8 times in a row ? One of the worlds leading aviation groups Air France/KLM were that bad for 8 years in a row ? Air Mauritius in our market in Australia have as recently as the last 3 years entered back into flying to the east coast ( Melbourne and Sydney ) only to drop the services again leaving people furious.
Only today, we received official word of a third weekly flight rotation between Perth and Mauritius ! Does Air Mauritius know something we don’t ?
We are certain – They must be planning a huge promotional activity in Perth, spending on sensible branding and awareness campaigns and offering amazing discounted airfares to travellers to go to Mauritius ! Ha Ha – Just kidding !!
What we do know is that Air Mauritius planes are full over Christmas and New Years and getting full towards the end of January and early December. This is the same thing that happens every year as people go to from and back and forwards between Mauritius, Australia, South Africa and France. This doesn’t apply to the rest of the year when high prices on air tickets alone rule the destination out.
We have asked if there will be any specials or deals – but sadly when planes aren’t full its hard to offer deals, and when you are already paying Virgin/Qantas to shuttle your passengers to Perth your margin’s are squeezed even further.
We remain unsure how a third flight, out of Perth, is going to help !
