Week 1 September 2012 | This week – Mauritius on Twitter and Instagram
Social media is a buzz this week with a popular Mauritius resort group and the MTPA running a competition for a chance to win a holiday simply by using the hash tag #Mauritius in your tweets ! The competition is apparently worldwide and open to everyone. We are unsure if being a prolific mention-er of #Mauritius in your tweets will gain you more chances to win or not.
While we @ VisitMauritius.com.au applaud the MTPA for moving with the times and running a social media competition, and one on Twitter at that, we are slightly disappointed at the implemented strategy.
#Mauritius means something – but as a call to action for a tourism slogan goes it’s got nothing on #ItsmorefuninthePhillipines .
The reason #ItsmorefuninthePhillipines was an award winning campaign ? It encouraged people to use it to describe their holiday experience or promote their offerings. #Mauritius is simply just #Mauritius
Even adding “visit” or “enjoy” or “It’s a pleasure” after the word Mauritius – would have been more emotive than just the word #Mauritius. It would have also allowed for a French variation – so as not to exclude the islands core market. #MauritiusItsaPleasure #IleMauriceCestunPlaisir
But anyway……I digress….
Updated 05 September 2012 | In updating this post we wanted to talk about the possibility of such a campaign backfiring as has happened before on Twitter with the Maldives #SunnySideofLife of campaign which went horribly wrong. The campaign was hijacked online, on Twitter, and then reported on all over the world. #FAIL !
A search of Twitter even today brings up mentions of #Sunnysideoflife – with tour operators using it amongst Maldivians still using it as a protest hashtag. The internet doesn’t forget !
Such a problem would have been considered ( we hope ) in the planning of this competition, however we felt it important to note that this could still in theory happen just as easily with the current “Tweet #Mauritius to win” competition setup !
As usual, Twitter and Instagram are a gold mine of user generated pics which show you the real Mauritius. Check out this weeks most popular !
